Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Study Abroad
In the study abroad context, a Band refers to a score or level used to measure a student’s English language proficiency, particularly in the IELTS exam. The IELTS test gives scores in the form of bands, ranging from 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert user). These bands reflect the student’s ability to understand, speak, read, and write in English, and are often required for admission to international universities and visa applications.

Australia
Study: Band 6.0 – 7.0
Work Visa: Band 6.0 minimum
Permanent Residency (PR): Higher bands (6.0 to 8.0)

New Zealand
Study: Band 6.0 – 6.5        Work Visa & PR: Band 6.5 generally preferred

Canada
Study: Band 6.0 – 6.5        Work Visa: Band 6.0 – 7      PR: Higher IELTS bands increase CRS score

UK

TOEFL iBT® (Test of English as a Foreign Language – Internet-Based Test)
The TOEFL iBT test is one of the most widely recognized English language proficiency exams globally. It is specifically designed for non-native English speakers who plan to pursue studies in an English-medium academic environment. TOEFL iBT evaluates a student’s ability to use and comprehend English at a university level.
The test emphasizes four essential language skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. It reflects the type of communication you will encounter in a classroom and on campus, making it a reliable benchmark for academic readiness.
Introducing the TOEFL Essentials Test
ETS has also launched the TOEFL Essentials® test, aimed at students who seek a shorter, more accessible assessment while upholding high academic standards. This test blends academic and general English tasks and is accepted by many institutions as a credible alternative to TOEFL iBT.
Why Choose TOEFL iBT?
TOEFL iBT is accepted by over 12,000 universities and institutions across more than 160 countries, including the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Furthermore, it is recognized by immigration authorities and professional certification organizations.
Developed and administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), the TOEFL iBT test is rooted in decades of academic research. It offers a standardized, fair, and objective measure of English proficiency, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This alignment makes it a globally respected option for both higher education and career advancement.
Key Features of TOEFL iBT
– Accepted worldwide for study, work, and immigration purposes
– Academic-oriented tasks that simulate real university interactions
– Assesses integrated skills (e.g., Reading + Speaking, Listening + Writing)
– Flexible testing options at a center or from home (TOEFL iBT Home Edition available)
– Faster score reporting, typically within 4–8 days
– MyBestâ„¢ Scores feature combines your highest section scores from multiple attempts
TOEFL Scoring System
The TOEFL iBT test employs a scaled scoring system, with each of the four skills scored between 0 and 30, culminating in a total score out of 120 points:
– Reading (0–30)
– Listening (0–30)
– Speaking (0–30)
– Writing (0–30)
Each section includes tasks that assess your ability to apply English in real academic contexts. Many questions test integrated skills; for instance, test-takers might read a passage and then listen to a lecture before crafting a written response.
TOEFL Test Results – Typically Available Within 6 Days
A significant advantage of TOEFL is its transparent and detailed scoring system. Results are typically available within 4 to 8 days of testing and are securely delivered through the ETS portal.
Overall Scores
Your total score reflects your ability to apply English language skills in academic settings. Rather than simply averaging the four sections, TOEFL provides both individual and total scores, allowing institutions to evaluate your strengths across different skill areas.
Sending Your TOEFL Scores to Universities
Once your scores are available, ETS allows you to send them to up to four universities or institutions for free as part of your registration. Additional reports can be ordered for a fee.
